There’s something about chocolate chip cookies and milk. Every time I eat them, it brings back fond memories of childhood. Of course, as a kid, I could eat all those calories and not worry about because they’d burn off quickly through hours of running and playing in the yard. As an adult, sometimes I still want that same comfort of a plate of cookies milk, but I work all day instead of playing and the calories stick more than they burn off. So, you can understand why I’d be totally in love with this chocolate chip cookie shake! I get the comforting flavors of cookies and milk without the added calories.
And speaking of chocolate chip cookies, did you know they’re an American invention? It’s true! In 1938, Ruth Graves Wakefield owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. The Inn’s restaurant was popular with locals and travelers wanting a home cooked meal.
Popular folklore tells it that she invented the cookie by accident and expected the chocolate chips to melt. However, her records indicate that she actually invented them on purpose. At the time, they’d been serving a thin butterscotch nut cookie with ice cream that was quite popular and she wanted to expand the offering. So she added chopped bits from a Nestle semi-sweet bar into her cookie mix. And thus the chocolate chip cookie was born. It was published in her 1928 cookbook.
They grew in popularity during World War II when soldiers stationed overseas received care packages with the cookies and shared them with their fellow soldiers from other parts of the country. Soon, Ruth was inundated with requests from around the world asking for her recipe. And in 1956, Maryland Cookies officially brought chocolate chip cookies to the UK.
