Why This Salmon Lasagna Works

The beauty of this recipe lies in its balance. While traditional lasagna is hearty and comforting, the use of salmon lightens the dish without sacrificing flavor. The pairing of two sauces – Alfredo and marinara – creates a creamy, tangy base that complements the richness of the fish. Each bite offers a blend of textures and layers that melt together beautifully in the oven.

  • Elegant but Easy – Simple ingredients, big payoff.

  • Great Use of Salmon – A fresh way to feature a favorite fish.

  • Rich Layers – Ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan bring gooey goodness.

  • Meal Prep Friendly – Assemble ahead and bake when ready.

  • Crowd-Pleasing – Perfect for seafood lovers and lasagna fans alike.

Ingredient Highlights

This salmon lasagna leans on pantry staples and fresh ingredients to deliver comfort food with a twist. Here’s what makes each layer special:

Salmon brings a tender, flaky texture and mild flavor that soaks up the seasoning and sauces beautifully. Baking it first ensures it’s perfectly cooked before layering.

A mix of Alfredo and marinara sauces keeps the lasagna from feeling too heavy or too tomato-forward. The creaminess of Alfredo balances the acidity of marinara, making for a more complex flavor.

A cheese trio – ricotta for creaminess, mozzarella for melt, and Parmesan for salt and depth – ensures each bite is ooey-gooey and savory.

Onion and garlic, sautéed before adding the sauces, give the whole dish a strong aromatic base.  This enhances the overall flavor.

A garnish of fresh parsley adds brightness and makes the lasagna feel a bit more elevated.

Cooking Notes & Tips

  • Use Fresh Salmon: Baking the salmon first ensures you won’t end up with raw or overcooked fish in your layers.

  • Balance the Sauce: Using both marinara and Alfredo gives the dish a well-rounded flavor. You can adjust the ratio slightly to your preference.

  • Let It Rest: Don’t skip the resting period after baking. It helps the lasagna hold together and enhances the texture.

  • Make Ahead: Assemble the lasagna earlier in the day, refrigerate it, and bake just before serving. You may need to add a few extra minutes to the baking time.

Equipment

  • 9×13 Baking Dish – Perfect for layering and baking the lasagna evenly.

  • Baking Sheet – Used to cook the salmon fillets before layering.

  • Skillet – Ideal for sautéing onions and garlic to flavor the sauce.

  • Spatula – Helps spread sauces and cheeses evenly during assembly.

  • Tongs – Useful for flipping salmon and placing noodles.

Equipment

  • 9x13 Baking Dish For assembling and baking the lasagna
  • Saucepan For preparing the combined marinara and Alfredo sauce
  • Baking sheet To cook the salmon fillets before layering
  • Tongs For handling cooked lasagna noodles and flaked salmon
  • Mixing Spoon To stir sauces and layer ingredients
  • Knife For chopping the onion and mincing garlic

Ingredients

  • 9 lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound fresh salmon fillets
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 cup Alfredo sauce
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the salmon fillets on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle olive oil over the fillets and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork. Once cooked, remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Then, flake the salmon into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
  • In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and minced garlic, sautéing until they become soft and translucent. Pour in the marinara sauce and Alfredo sauce, stirring well to combine. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 5-7 minutes, then remove from heat.
  • Spread a thin layer of sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Arrange 3 lasagna noodles on top of the sauce. Spread half of the flaked salmon over the noodles, followed by dollops of ricotta cheese and a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. Repeat this layering process once more, ending with a final layer of noodles and sauce on top.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes or until the lasagna is heated through and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  • Once done, remove the lasagna from the oven and let it sit for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley for an extra burst of flavor.

Notes

  • Noodles: Use no-boil noodles for ease, or boil traditional noodles in advance.
  • Salmon: Fresh is best, but cooked leftover salmon can also be used.
  • Sauce blend: Combining marinara and Alfredo gives a creamy, tangy flavor that pairs beautifully with salmon.
  • Make-ahead: Assemble the lasagna earlier in the day and refrigerate before baking for an easy dinner option.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave until heated through.
