I love the cool refreshing taste of candy canes during the Christmas season. Why not add it to your shake? This candy cane protein shake will make you think of Christmas all year long. Plus, you get a protein boost while enjoying a delicious treat. Candy cane protein shakes are so delicious even your kids will like them! I mean, really, what’s not to like?
We have Germany to thank for candy canes. About 250 years ago, Germans began creating white sugar sticks.
There’s a cute, though probably historically inaccurate story, about a choir master. He was concerned about the children in the choir sitting quietly through the Christmas service and gave them sweet treats shaped like a shepherd’s crook to suck on through the night. Why a shepherd’s crook? To remind the children of the shepherds who went to visit baby Jesus. If you do a quick search, you’ll find many other charming legends about where the candy cane got its start.
According to history, around 1900, the colored stripes and wintergreen or peppermint flavors were added. About 1920 a Georgian named Bob McCormack began making these treats for his friends and family. They were such a hit it grew into a business! His brother, a Catholic priest, wanted the curve and invented the machine that bent the straight stick automatically.
Candy canes are associated with Christmas because of the shape, but that’s not the only reason. Christians have associated white with Jesus’ purity, red with His blood, and the mint flavor with the hyssop plant that was used for purification in biblical times.
So, the next time you’re enjoying a minty treat, or creating a candy can protein shake, think about all the history and invention behind bringing you that bit of minty goodness.
